My unfinished rough Journal
Starting a journal can feel intimidating, especially if you're an 'inexperienced journaler' like I was. The pressure to make every page perfect, with elaborate calligraphy and flawless layouts, often stops us before we even begin. But what if I told you that the best kind of journal is often the 'unfinished rough Journal' – a space where authenticity trumps perfection? For me, a rough journal is a sanctuary for unfiltered thoughts. It's not about creating an Instagram-worthy spread every time, but about getting what's on your mind down on paper. This approach has been incredibly liberating. I've found that letting go of perfection allows for a much deeper, more honest self-reflection. So, what does a rough journal look like in practice? It's whatever you need it to be. One day, it might be a simple page for "June 2024 Pg 1" where I jot down a few observations or feelings. Another day, I might dedicate a whole page to a brain dump, asking "What's on my mind?" and just letting the words flow, messy and unedited. I've also found immense value in creating mind maps, like one I did recently titled "Things you can control," which helped me sort through anxieties by focusing on what's within my power. My journal is also where I track aspirations and dreams. I have a dedicated section for my "30 Before 30" goals, listing everything from becoming a nurse practitioner to traveling the world and even meeting Taylor Swift! Seeing these goals written down, even in a rough draft, gives them a tangible quality and keeps me motivated. It’s a powerful reminder that "WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'VE LOST EVERYTHING, YOU STILL HAVE -" your dreams, your experiences, and your ability to choose your path. Don't be afraid to experiment with different styles. My pages are often a mix of text, doodles, and bits of ephemera. Sometimes I'll just write a single word like "July" in a big, bold font to mark the start of a new month. There's no right or wrong way to do it. The key is to make it your own personal space for exploration and expression. Whether you're processing complex emotions or simply documenting your day, a rough journal provides a safe, judgment-free zone. It’s truly a journey of self-discovery, one imperfect page at a time.
