Hidradenitis Suppurativa Warrior

It’s truly a journey being an HS warrior, and like many of you, I've faced the daily challenges this condition throws at us. My excisional debridement surgery was a turning point, as I shared, but managing HS day-to-day, especially in sensitive areas, is a whole different battle. I know many of us deal with flares in places like the face and under the breast, and these can be particularly distressing. Speaking from my own experience, dealing with hidradenitis under the breast has been incredibly tough. It’s an area prone to friction and moisture, which can make flares worse. I found that choosing the right clothing makes a huge difference. Switching to soft, breathable fabrics like cotton for bras and tops, and avoiding anything with underwire, really helped reduce irritation. I also make sure to keep the area as dry as possible, especially after showering, using a soft towel to gently pat dry. Sometimes, I even use a small piece of gauze or a thin cotton pad to absorb moisture during the day. For cleaning, I stick to a gentle, pH-balanced wash, avoiding harsh soaps or scrubs that could further irritate the skin. It’s not just about physical comfort; the emotional toll of dealing with painful spots in such a private area can be immense, making you feel self-conscious. Remember you're not alone in these struggles. Then there’s hidradenitis suppurativa on the face, sometimes referred to as acne inversa due to its appearance. This is perhaps one of the most challenging areas because it’s so visible. I remember feeling so self-conscious when I had flares on my face, wanting to hide away. What I’ve learned is that a gentle skincare routine is paramount. I use a mild cleanser twice a day and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Avoiding harsh exfoliants or scrubbing vigorously is key; being gentle is always better. For makeup, if I choose to wear it, I opt for mineral-based, non-irritating products and always ensure I remove it thoroughly before bed. Sun protection is also vital – a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen can help protect sensitive skin. Shaving or hair removal can be tricky too; I found electric razors or very sharp single-blade razors, used gently and with the grain, caused less irritation than multi-blade ones. For some, laser hair removal has been a game-changer in affected areas. Living with HS truly makes you realize how strong you are. It’s a constant battle, but there are ways to manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. Whether it’s finding the right post-operative care after excisional debridement, or figuring out daily routines for managing flares on your face or under your breast, every step forward is a victory.
