Would you rather do endless stairs like this, or a steep rocky trail?
When planning a hike in Japan, especially around iconic spots like Mount Eboshi, it’s important to be prepared for physically demanding routes. Mount Eboshi is well-known for its steep, vertical staircase that can quickly test your stamina and knee strength — something many hikers only realize after starting the climb. From personal experience, pacing yourself and taking short breaks to stretch can make a huge difference in endurance. In my 20s, I underestimated how taxing some of these trails could be, especially those with endless stairs or rocky sections, but with time and practice, I learned a few key strategies. Wearing proper hiking shoes with good ankle support and cushioning helps absorb the impact on your knees. Carrying trekking poles can also provide extra stability and reduce joint strain on the descent. For those deciding between stair-heavy trails or steep rocky paths, both require a good level of fitness but offer different types of challenges. Staircases like those at Mount Eboshi might seem easier initially, but their repetitive impact can wear down your joints if you're not cautious. Rocky trails demand careful foot placement to avoid slipping but can offer more varied scenery and less continuous strain on specific muscles. Also, Japan’s hiking spots are well marked but it’s advisable to carry a trail map or use a GPS app to stay on track, especially on less crowded routes. Start early in the day to avoid afternoon crowds and to have ample time to enjoy the vistas from the summit without rushing. Remember to pack light but carry essentials like water, snacks, sun protection, and layered clothing for changing weather. By being well-prepared and aware of the physical demands, hiking Mount Eboshi and other Japanese mountains can be a truly rewarding experience both physically and culturally, offering breathtaking views and a chance to connect with nature in unique ways.
