🚩 OT “Red Flags” Checklist (By Grade Level) 🚩
Not every struggle means a student needs OT—but some signs shouldn’t be ignored. This quick checklist can be utilized by a teacher to help them know when to try Tier 1 supports… and when it may be time to consult OT. 💛
👶 Pre-K (Ages 3–4)
Look for challenges with sensory responses, transitions, play skills, and early fine motor development (grasp, tools, self-care).
📚 Elementary (K–8)
Watch for handwriting difficulties (especially in younger grades), attention, organization, and staying on task.
➡️ After ~5th grade, the focus often shifts from handwriting to written output, organization, and keeping up with class demands.
🎓 High School (9–12)
It’s less about handwriting and more about function:
✔️ Task completion
✔️ Time management
✔️ Organization
✔️ Use of tools/technology
✔️ Self-regulation
💡 OT in upper grades often focuses on:
✨ Task modification
✨ Assistive technology (speech-to-text, typing, etc.)
✨ Independence & self-advocacy
🔍 What should you do?
Start with Tier 1 classroom strategies…
BUT if concerns are persistent, impact learning, or show up across settings—it may be time to consult OT.
💛 Supporting students. Empowering potential.
