✨ One thing I wish teachers understood-School OT
School-based OT is so much more than handwriting. ✏️➡️🏫
I’m sure many OTs have said it once, twice, or probably a million times… “we are not the handwriting teachers.”
Yes, handwriting can be part of what we address but occupational therapy in schools focuses on a student’s ability to ACCESS and PARTICIPATE in their educational environment and curriculum. 📚✨
That means we look at:
• Sensory processing and regulation
• Attention and executive functioning
• Fine motor and visual motor skills
• Self-help and independence at school
• Classroom participation
• Environmental supports and accommodations
• Functional performance throughout the school day
A student may struggle with writing not because they “don’t try,” but because their body and brain are working overtime just to process the classroom environment. Sensory needs, posture, regulation, visual processing, motor planning, and attention all impact learning. 🧠💛
School-based OT operates under an EDUCATIONAL model, not a medical model.
Our role is to support students in accessing their education, engaging in school routines, and participating as independently as possible within the school setting.
We collaborate with teachers, families, and school teams to help students succeed in the context where learning actually happens such as the classroom, cafeteria, playground, hallways, and beyond. 🤝🏿 🤝🏾🤝
When access improves, participation improves. And that’s what school-based OT is all about. 💙
