Let’s get real for a second... 🗣️✨

If you could sit down with administrator and the teachers in your building for five to 10 minutes, what is the one thing you wish they truly "got" about school-based OT?

The "OT Lens" sees the whole child, from self-regulation and executive functioning to playground social skills and cafeteria independence. We focus on more than just handwriting and sensory. But sometimes, our role can feel like a mystery to those outside our world.

We want to hear from YOU! 🎤

Whether you’re a seasoned OT or COTA, What is that one piece of the OT puzzle you wish everyone understood? 🧩

Drop your thoughts below. Your answer might be exactly what a fellow practitioner or administrator needs to hear today! 👇🏿👇🏾👇🏽👇🏼👇🏻👇

... Read moreAs a school-based occupational therapist, I’ve often felt that the full scope of what we do can be misunderstood or underestimated by other staff members and administrators. OT is not just about handwriting or sensory activities; it involves a comprehensive approach to support the whole child’s development and daily functioning, both academically and socially. One key aspect I've experienced is the importance of self-regulation and executive functioning. Many students struggle with managing their emotions, maintaining attention, planning tasks, and organizing materials. Through targeted interventions, we help them develop these skills, which directly affect their success in the classroom and beyond. Additionally, helping students navigate social interactions on the playground or during lunch periods is crucial. These moments provide opportunities to build social skills, cooperation, and independence. Teaching children how to engage appropriately and confidently in these settings can improve their overall school experience and sense of belonging. For some administrators and teachers, the OT role can feel mysterious because it touches on so many facets of student life. To bridge this gap, communication and collaboration are essential. I’ve found that brief, focused conversations describing our goals and strategies can shift perspectives and build stronger support networks for students. Ultimately, the “OT lens” is about seeing the child as a whole person with diverse needs—not just addressing isolated issues. This holistic perspective is what enables us to create meaningful, lasting improvements in children’s lives. If more school staff understood this, it would transform how we work together for the benefit of every learner.
