Attention is about so much more than “focusing”

A lot of our students are working hard to manage regulation, sensory needs, working memory, mental endurance, and shifting between tasks, all at the same time. When we look at attention through that lens, student behavior starts to make a lot more sense. 💛

This is why school-based OTs focus on supporting the underlying skills that help students participate, engage, and learn throughout the school day. Small supports and strategies can make a big difference. ✨

Which attention skill do you find yourself addressing most often with your students? ⬇️

... Read moreIn my experience working with students facing attention challenges, it's clear that 'paying attention' is much more complex than simply focusing on one task. Attention involves multiple dynamic processes including sustaining attention over time, selectively focusing amidst distractions, alternating between tasks, and managing divided attention when handling multiple inputs concurrently. What I often notice is that when students struggle, it's not because they lack willpower but because they must simultaneously manage their emotional regulation, sensory processing needs, working memory, and mental endurance. For example, a student might become overwhelmed by sensory stimuli in a noisy classroom, which disrupts their ability to sustain attention or shift focus appropriately. Addressing these foundational skills through tailored sensory tools, individualized strategies, and supportive environments can significantly enhance a student's engagement and learning capacity. Mental endurance also plays a critical role—it enables students to persist with tasks that are unfamiliar, tedious, or challenging. From personal observation, supporting executive functioning skills such as working memory helps students hold and manipulate information, which in turn improves their ability to stay on task and complete activities successfully. Collaborating closely with teachers and families ensures that the interventions are consistent and contextually relevant, creating an ecosystem that empowers students to build their attentional skills over time. Additionally, recognizing the impact of medications and consulting healthcare professionals is important for understanding each student's unique situation. Ultimately, attention is a cognitive skill that can be intentionally developed. By addressing these multiple components, school-based occupational therapists empower students not just to focus but to truly attend, participate, and thrive in their school environment.

The second slide explains why screen time matters, detailing how screens affect developing brains. It highlights dopamine spikes, the still-forming prefrontal cortex, and clarifies that behaviors are signals of a dysregulated nervous system, not character flaws.
