Movement isn’t just a break from learning

Movement is a powerful tool that helps students focus, regulate, and succeed! 💙✨

Simple movement opportunities throughout the school day can improve attention, emotional regulation, participation, and overall learning outcomes for so many students. Whether it’s brain breaks, stretching, sensory tools, or quick movement activities, giving students chances to move can make a BIG difference in the classroom! 🧠🏃🏾‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️📚

As school-based professionals, we can support students by incorporating purposeful movement into daily routines to help them stay engaged and ready to learn.

What are some of your favorite ways to incorporate movement during the school day? 👇🏾👇

... Read moreFrom my experience working in educational settings, I've seen firsthand how purposeful movement truly transforms the classroom environment. Movement isn't merely a break from learning; it acts as a catalyst for improving cognitive functions and emotional well-being. When students engage in activities like brain breaks, stretching, or using sensory tools such as fidget bands and wiggle seats, they often return to tasks more focused and less agitated. In particular, movement promotes increased blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which sharpens attention and supports sustained focus on learning activities. This is incredibly helpful for students with attention difficulties or those struggling to regulate their emotions. Incorporating short movement exercises before tests or during transitions also helps students reset and approach learning with renewed confidence. I have found that standing up to review content or doing chair push-ups can be simple yet effective ways to keep students alert without disrupting the classroom flow. Sensory tools provide safe opportunities for movement that accommodate diverse sensory processing needs, allowing children who might otherwise feel restless or overwhelmed to stay calm and engaged. Overall, adding regular movement breaks does not detract from instruction time; instead, it maximizes learning outcomes by empowering students to feel more ready and able to participate actively. Schools can benefit by weaving these movement strategies seamlessly into daily routines to support every learner’s success.
