As the school year comes to a close let’s remember

Not every role is at the front of the classroom, but every role plays a part in helping students grow, succeed, and thrive. 💛

Teachers deserve to be celebrated loudly — and so do the related service providers, support staff, and specialists who work alongside them every day. School OTs, PTs, SLPs, social workers, psychologists, nurses, paras, counselors, and so many others are part of the team that supports students academically, emotionally, socially, and physically.

As schools celebrate staff appreciation, let’s remember the entire village behind student success — teachers, related service providers, counselors, paras/support staff alike.

Inclusion matters in appreciation, too. ✨

... Read moreWhen reflecting on the school year’s end, I always find it essential to recognize how every staff member contributes to student success—not just the teachers we see in the classroom. From my experience volunteering in schools, I’ve observed how occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), speech-language pathologists (SLPs), social workers, psychologists, nurses, paraprofessionals, and counselors truly form the backbone of support for students. These professionals don’t just assist with academics; they help with social and emotional development, physical health, and mental well-being. For instance, OTs support students who struggle with fine motor skills or sensory processing, enabling them to participate fully in classroom activities. PTs help those with mobility challenges. SLPs are crucial for children working on communication skills, while social workers and psychologists address emotional and behavioral needs. Paraprofessionals often provide essential one-on-one assistance, helping students stay engaged and supported. The powerful image of "Teachers as superheroes" wearing invisible capes resonates deeply because it reminds us that not all heroes are on the stage, but every role is vital. In fact, appreciation events during the school year should highlight this collective effort by including every member of the education village. Inclusion in gratitude fosters a healthier, more united school culture. Showing appreciation for all staff, including those behind the scenes, boosts morale and emphasizes that every person’s role matters. This holistic gratitude impacts how supported the staff feel, which in turn improves the quality of care and instruction students receive. Therefore, as we celebrate staff appreciation, let’s make sure the message is inclusive: every person involved in education plays a crucial role in helping students succeed and thrive. Remembering this strengthens our communities and ultimately benefits the students we all care about deeply.

You missed the custodians and lunch ladies too! Unfortunately it’s the same way in most fields though. I work at a nursing home and both departments I work in are way under appreciated!

Absolutely! Custodians, lunch staff, paraprofessionals, therapists, and many others often get overlooked despite playing such important roles. Every person contributes to helping students and residents succeed, and appreciation should extend to the entire team. Thank you for highlighting that perspective—it’s a reminder that recognition matters across many professions. As a school-based OT, I understand how we can be unappreciated.
