Things that help during POTS flare: Part one

I curated a list of small things that make motherhood a bit easier when dealing with chronic illness. I can’t always determine when I will have a flare day, but I can prep for it.

1. Floor play stations

2. Couch baskets with activities

3. Diaper stations in multiple rooms

4. Low-energy outings

5. Rotating toy bins

6. Snack baskets

7. Portable chargers

8. Remembering that survival counts

9. Rolling carts

10. Morning snack prep

11. Water bottles everywhere

12. Compression gear by the door

... Read moreLiving with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) while managing motherhood is a daily balancing act that requires creativity and patience. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is how crucial it is to prepare your environment to minimize extra effort during a flare. Setting up multiple diaper stations around the house can save precious energy and time, preventing the need to carry heavy diaper bags back and forth. Similarly, organizing couch baskets filled with activities keeps children entertained nearby, allowing you to rest without feeling guilty or disengaged. Rotating toy bins every few days also keeps kids interested without overwhelming you with clutter, while snack baskets positioned strategically provide easy access to fueling up both yourself and your little ones. Low-energy outings—such as visits to a local park or a quiet library—are wonderful for getting fresh air and maintaining your mental well-being without pushing your physical limits. Portable chargers have been a lifesaver for keeping devices powered, so you can rely on technology for distraction or help when needed. Most importantly, remembering that survival counts is a powerful mindset shift. Not every day will be perfect, and that's okay. Prioritize essentials and be gentle with yourself—celebrate small wins like prepping morning snacks ahead or having water bottles scattered around to stay hydrated and symptom-manage. Compression gear placed by the door serves as a quick reminder and tool for managing blood flow when you step outside or begin feeling symptoms. Rolling carts also help transport items without straining yourself. Managing POTS on flare days means adapting your surroundings to your body's needs, which inevitably leads to a smoother, less stressful motherhood journey. These small, thoughtful preparations can profoundly impact your energy conservation and emotional resilience.
