Dino shroom 🍄

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share a bit more about my latest little artwork, the 'Mushroom Dinosaur' that you saw in my sketchbook. I've been absolutely obsessed with combining unexpected elements lately, and the idea of a gentle, green dinosaur sporting a vibrant red mushroom on its head just popped into my mind one sunny afternoon. It felt like something straight out of a whimsical forest, and I just had to bring it to life with my watercolors! My creative process usually starts with a rough sketch in my trusty spiral-bound notebook. I love how these notebooks allow me to experiment without pressure, making them perfect for developing quirky ideas like this dino-shroom. For this piece, I began by lightly sketching the outline of the dinosaur, focusing on a friendly, slightly goofy expression. Then came the mushroom – I imagined it as a little hat or a natural extension, something that just belongs there, adding to its charm. I used a soft pencil so it wouldn't show through the watercolor too much, keeping the lines delicate. When it came to painting, watercolors are my go-to for their beautiful transparency and the way colors blend on the page. They have this incredible ability to create soft gradients and vibrant layers. I started with the background, laying down a soft wash of light blue for the sky, letting it fade towards the horizon, and adding a cheerful touch of yellow for the sun, letting them dry a bit before moving on to avoid muddying the colors. For the dinosaur itself, I chose a lovely muted green, building up layers to give it some subtle texture and depth, ensuring it felt alive. Getting the red mushroom just right was a particularly fun challenge; I wanted it to really pop against the green of the dino and the blue sky, almost like a little beacon of color and whimsy. The brown ground beneath its feet was added last, grounding the whole scene and giving our mushroom dinosaur a stable place to stand in its painted world. One of the things I enjoy most about watercolor painting is seeing how the colors interact and create new shades, especially when wet-on-wet techniques are used. There's a certain magic to it – you never quite know exactly what you'll get, and that's part of the excitement! It's not always perfect, and sometimes happy accidents lead to the best results. This particular piece, with its simple yet imaginative composition of a green dinosaur-like creature and its bright red mushroom, really captures a sense of playful wonder and joy for me.
