Being a former sorority executive board member during COVID truly brings back so many memories as I reflect on that unprecedented time. It was a period unlike any other, demanding adaptability, creativity, and a whole lot of resilience from leaders across the board, especially within the unique structure of a sorority. My experience on the executive board during COVID was a masterclass in navigating uncertainty. One of the biggest challenges, of course, revolved around our meetings. Gone were the days of gathering in person, sharing a meal, and having those organic, impromptu conversations that often spark the best ideas. Instead, we were thrust into the world of Zoom and virtual meeting reflections. It was tough to maintain engagement, read body language through a screen, and ensure everyone felt heard. We had to be incredibly intentional about our agendas, incorporating check-ins and interactive elements to combat 'Zoom fatigue.' I remember one particular meeting where half the sisters had their cameras off, and it felt like I was talking to a wall. It really pushed us to think outside the box on how to keep the sisterhood vibrant, even when we couldn't be physically together. Beyond just meetings, adapting our entire sorority experience was a monumental task. How do you plan sisterhood events, philanthropy initiatives, or even recruitment when everything has to be virtual or socially distanced? We had to get creative. We organized virtual game nights, online study groups, and even a 'drive-by' philanthropy event where sisters safely dropped off donations. These weren't the traditions we had envisioned, but seeing the sisters come together and make the best of it was incredibly heartwarming and taught me so much about our community's strength. These reflections on how we pivoted still inspire me today. Looking back, my time as an executive board member during COVID shaped me in profound ways. I learned invaluable lessons in crisis management, innovative problem-solving, and the critical importance of clear and compassionate communication. It taught me that genuine connection isn't dependent on proximity, but on effort and empathy. The experience reinforced the power of leadership during adversity and how vital it is to lead with both your head and your heart. These memories of overcoming challenges together are something I'll carry with me forever, reminding me that even in the toughest times, there's always an opportunity for growth and stronger bonds.
