From personal experience, applying a cold compress right after the bite helps reduce swelling and soothes the area. Using over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion can also alleviate itching effectively. It's important to avoid scratching, as this may lead to infection or worsen the irritation. In my case, after a bike ride through wooded areas, I noticed a small red bump that was itchy and tender. I gently washed the area with soap and water, then applied a cold pack. Drinking plenty of water and resting can aid the healing process as well. If the bite shows signs of infection—such as increasing redness, warmth, or pus—or if you develop symptoms like fever or swelling beyond the bite, it’s crucial to seek medical advice promptly. To prevent future bites, using insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin, wearing long sleeves and pants during outdoor activities, and being cautious around areas with dense foliage or standing water is helpful. Remember, early action and proper care make the difference in recovering comfortably from bug bites.
