Adding a Decal to a Tumbler
Eventually this cup will have a drip added to it now, but for now I’m enjoying the simplicity 🥰

Hey everyone! I've been getting so many questions about how I get my decals to look so perfect on my tumblers, and honestly, it's simpler than you think! I love adding a personal touch to my cups, whether it's for myself or as a custom gift for friends. There’s something so satisfying about turning a plain tumbler into a unique piece that totally reflects your style. So, you're ready to dive into the world of tumbler stickers and decals? Here's my go-to method for a flawless application every time. First things first, gather your supplies: you'll need your chosen vinyl decal, the tumbler itself (obviously!), rubbing alcohol, a lint-free cloth, and a squeegee or even a credit card can work in a pinch. Step-by-Step for a Perfect Decal Application: Cleanliness is Key: This is probably the most crucial step! Before you even think about applying your decal, thoroughly clean your tumbler. I use rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth to wipe down the surface where the decal will go. This removes any oils, dust, or fingerprints that could prevent your decal from sticking properly. Let it dry completely – usually just a few seconds. Prepare Your Decal: Lay your decal face up on a flat surface. Use your squeegee to firmly rub over the front (the transfer tape side) of the decal. This helps the vinyl adhere to the transfer tape, making sure all parts lift off the backing paper smoothly. Peel with Care: Slowly peel the transfer tape (with your decal attached) away from the backing paper at a sharp angle. If any part of the decal doesn't come up with the transfer tape, just lay it back down and rub over that spot again with your squeegee. Take your time here! Position and Apply: Now for the exciting part! Carefully position your decal on the tumbler. Once it touches the surface, it's pretty hard to reposition without stretching or damaging the vinyl, so try to get it right the first time. Once you're happy with the placement, gently press it down from the center outwards to avoid air bubbles. Squeegee It Down: Using your squeegee, firmly rub over the entire decal, working from the center out to the edges. Apply good pressure to ensure the vinyl adheres well to the tumbler surface. I usually go over it a few times in different directions. The Reveal: Slowly peel off the transfer tape at a sharp angle. Again, if any part of the decal lifts, just press the transfer tape back down and rub over it again before trying to peel. And voilà! Your decal should be perfectly adhered. My Top Tips for Success: Avoid Bubbles: The cleaning and squeegee steps are your best friends for bubble-free application. If you do get a tiny bubble, you can sometimes gently press it out with your finger or even pierce it with a tiny pin and smooth it down. Cure Time: Vinyl decals aren't fully cured immediately. I always recommend letting your tumbler sit for at least 24-48 hours before washing or heavy use. This allows the adhesive to fully bond with the tumbler surface. Hand Wash Only! This is non-negotiable if you want your decals to last. Dishwashers are too harsh and will cause your beautiful design to peel or lift prematurely. I’ve made tumblers with all sorts of designs, from simple monograms to more intricate holiday themes – imagine a cute Santa or candy cane decal like those 'C LAC CLAUS SANTA' or '10 CANDY CANES' designs I've seen! The possibilities are endless. Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun with it. Happy crafting!
