Memorial Day is widely recognized as a day to honor those who have died in military service, but many people are unaware of its rich and complex origins. It is fascinating to learn that in 1865, freed Black Americans organized one of the earliest Memorial Day ceremonies, a powerful act of remembrance and resilience. This ceremony took place shortly after the end of the Civil War, a time of great upheaval and hope for newly emancipated individuals. From personal experience and extensive reading, I find that this historical fact significantly deepens the meaning of Memorial Day. It highlights how marginalized communities have long contributed to shaping national traditions, yet their stories are often overshadowed or omitted entirely. The phrase, "We are always the first. Then other people try to claim it for themselves," resonates strongly when reflecting on how history is recorded and celebrated.
