Memorias
No borres tu pasado, abrázalo.
— Salmo 105:5
Dios te bendiga.
Alvaro Ferro Lugones
Reading Alvaro Ferro's beautiful piece about 'Memorias' truly resonated with me, bringing a flood of my own reflections. It’s so easy to wish away the harder parts of our past, isn't it? We often try to forget the moments that caused pain or regret. But as Alvaro so wisely puts it, 'some hurt, others heal, and many become the perfect reminder of how much you've grown.' This line especially struck a chord, reminding me that even the most challenging memories are not without purpose. I've learned, through my own journey, that true healing often begins when we stop resisting those difficult memories and, instead, embrace them as part of our story. It’s not about dwelling in the past, but acknowledging its role in shaping the resilient, wise person we are today. Think about it – every tear shed, every silent prayer, every moment of doubt or triumph has etched something valuable into our character. These aren't just scars; they are indeed 'huellas de tu resistencia' – footprints of our resilience. For a long time, I struggled with certain memories, wishing I could just erase them from my mind. They felt heavy, like anchors holding me back. But then I started to shift my perspective. What if these challenging experiences weren't meant to be forgotten, but understood? What if they were precisely what I needed to learn empathy, develop strength, or discover a deeper faith? It's a powerful thought that 'Dios no lo dejará sin propósito' – God won't leave any part of our past without purpose. This belief has been a game-changer for me. It transformed my view of past mistakes and heartbreaks from burdens into profound lessons, revealing how even in my darkest 'chapters,' a loving hand was guiding my narrative. Embracing our memories also means giving ourselves grace. We often look back and judge our past selves with the wisdom of today, forgetting that we were doing the best we could with what we knew then. Acknowledging this compassionately allows us to learn from the past without being defined by its limitations. It enables us to take the 'teachings' that memories offer, without getting stuck in the pain. Alvaro's advice to 'Atesora tus memorias, pero no te quedes en ellas' – treasure your memories, but don't stay in them – is crucial. It's a delicate balance. We honor our past by learning from it, by seeing how far we've come, and by appreciating the person it helped us become. But our gaze must ultimately be forward. The best chapters of our lives are still waiting to be written. Our memories serve as a rich foundation, a testament to our journey, but they are not the destination. They are the roots that ground us as we reach for new growth. So, let’s reflect, learn, and then step boldly into what’s next, carrying the wisdom of our 'Memorias' with us, knowing that incredible things are still to unfold.
