From Cartagena with love
We love to travel. I have been lucky enough to see a lot of this world. #cartagenacolombia #cartagena #travelcouple #travelwithme2024
My recent trip to Cartagena was nothing short of magical, and I can't wait to share all our discoveries with you! We absolutely fell in love with this vibrant city, a true jewel of Colombia. If you're wondering what makes Cartagena so special, or planning your own adventure, here's my personal take on the best things to do, where to experience the buzzing nightlife, and what to expect from the weather, especially if you're considering a September visit. Top Things to Do in Cartagena: First off, you absolutely must explore the Walled City. Walking through those historic streets felt like stepping back in time. Every corner revealed colorful colonial buildings, charming balconies overflowing with flowers, and lively plazas perfect for people-watching. We spent hours just getting lost, stumbling upon artisan shops and cozy cafes. Don't miss a visit to the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a magnificent fortress offering incredible panoramic views – it’s a steep climb, but totally worth it for the history and the photo opportunities! For a different vibe, the Getsemanà neighborhood is a must. It's known for its incredible street art, bohemian atmosphere, and lively squares. We loved seeing the murals and catching spontaneous street performances. If you have time, a day trip to the Rosario Islands is essential for some pristine beach time and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. It's a perfect escape from the city heat and offers a completely different side of Cartagena. Cartagena Nightlife: When the sun sets, Cartagena truly comes alive! The nightlife is just as vibrant as its daytime charm. We found ourselves drawn to Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemanà almost every evening. It transforms into a buzzing hub with street food vendors, live music, and people just hanging out and enjoying the atmosphere. It’s a fantastic place to grab a casual drink and soak it all in. For something more upbeat, there are plenty of salsa clubs and bars within the Walled City and Getsemanà where you can dance the night away. We even found a rooftop bar with incredible views of the city lights and the Caribbean Sea – perfect for a romantic evening. The energy is infectious, and you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the Colombian rhythm. Weather in Cartagena in September: Now, let's talk about the weather, especially for those considering a September trip to Cartagena. September is generally part of Cartagena's rainy season. Don't let that deter you though! We experienced warm, humid weather, with occasional rain showers. These usually weren't prolonged downpours but rather intense, short bursts, often clearing up quickly to reveal sunshine once more. It means you might need an umbrella or a light rain jacket, but you'll still have plenty of sunny hours to enjoy. The humidity is quite high, so pack light, breathable clothing. An upside of visiting in September is that it's typically less crowded than peak season, which can make exploring more relaxed. The sporadic rain also means the landscape surrounding Cartagena is beautifully lush and green. Just be prepared for the heat and humidity, and embrace the occasional refreshing shower! All in all, Cartagena is a destination that captures your heart. From its rich history and stunning architecture to its lively streets and warm people, there's so much to love. As we said our final 'Farewell, Cartagena,' we knew we'd be back. I hope these insights help you plan your own incredible journey!
