Better Than the Movies - Lynn Painter 💿📽️

This book had been on my TBR for f*cking everrr! I thought this would be the perfect palate cleanser (and it totally was), but it turned out to be so much more. I was surprised, this had no business being incredibly adorable, sweet, and hilarious. There was one scene that had me laughing nonstop, and the banter? Oh, the banter was bantering! I was such a giddy fool.

The characters kept the story alive. I was not bored one bit. And the music and rom-com movie references? Pure, nostalgic joy. I’m so tempted to rewatch some of the classic movies mentioned!

Then the emotions hit. It was angsty—the worry, the dread—it hurt so good! Lynn did such a wonderful job bringing it all together.

... Read moreOkay, so you've already heard how much I loved 'Better Than the Movies' by Lynn Painter, but I simply have to gush a little more and tell you why this book truly earned its perfect 5-star rating from me! If you're searching for a rom-com that will genuinely make you laugh out loud, swoon, and maybe even shed a tear or two, then you absolutely need to add this novel to your TBR. One of the biggest reasons this book resonated so deeply with me is the incredible character development, especially with Liz Buxbaum and Wes Bennett. Their journey from childhood frenemies to something much more is just *chef's kiss*. Liz, with her rom-com obsession and often awkward but endearing personality, felt so real. And Wes? Oh, Wes. He's the grumpy-sweet hero who just steals your heart without even trying. Their banter is legendary – seriously, I found myself highlighting so many of their exchanges on my Kindle because they were just too good. It's not just witty; it’s genuinely hilarious and shows their underlying affection even when they're bickering. This dynamic, often found in classic rom-com movies, is portrayed flawlessly by Lynn Painter. The plot itself is a delightful blend of classic rom-com tropes given a fresh spin. We get the fake dating trope, which is always a winner in my book, but it's handled with such charm and genuine emotional growth. The way their past is woven into their present interactions adds so much depth, making their eventual connection feel earned and incredibly satisfying. Lynn Painter truly nails the balance between the lighthearted, laugh-out-loud moments and the deeper, more angsty emotional beats. You feel Liz's anxieties and Wes's hidden vulnerabilities, making them incredibly relatable. And can we talk about the rom-com references? As a huge fan of the genre myself, I spent half the book grinning at every nod to iconic movies. It’s like a warm, nostalgic hug for anyone who grew up watching those films. It’s not just superficial; these references are cleverly integrated into Liz’s worldview and even influence her actions, making her character even more endearing. Even the book cover, which I often admired on my Kindle, perfectly captures the vibe of the story. The illustrated characters in their rom-com poses immediately tell you what kind of delightful journey you're about to embark on. It’s a whimsical and inviting cover art that truly reflects the sweet and funny content within. Reading this book on my Kindle, nestled on my wooden table, felt like a perfect escape. If you’re looking for a book that’s "better than the movies" in its own right, delivering on all the promises of a fantastic rom-com novel, then pick up Lynn Painter’s masterpiece. It's a heartwarming, laugh-out-loud, and utterly captivating read that will leave you smiling long after you've turned the last page. Trust me, your heart will thank you.
