Working in a hospital during peak Covid
We all remember 2020…. It felt like it was just yesterday that COVID-19 shut the world down. While all my friends and family worked from home, I was working the front lines during this pandemic. To say I was scared was an understatement this is when no one knew how it was spreading, where is came from and who was affected the worst. I remember when our first patient arrived in the emergency room it hit the local news and was a huge deal and from there the numbers just kept growing. The hospital was shut down completely to visitors and we had to be tempted daily to make sure we had no symptoms and were required weekly Covid tests. From the time I clocked in to the time I clocked out I was wearing an N95 with another mask on top of it. The healthcare scene was something straight out of horror movie. The number of infections and deaths just kept rising and with no cure in sight at the time it was genuinely a terrifying place to be. My family quarantined me into my room and I was to eat dinner by myself and was only allowed to use the bathroom closest to my bedroom in the house. I felt like an outcast, I wasn’t able to spend time with my friends, family or my boyfriend. It truly felt like the world was coming to an end. 10 months into the lockdown I remember when the hospital announced we had gotten the Covid vaccinations in stock and staff were to get them if we wanted to continue to work unless we had a serious underlying condition. I remember my mom being so mad at me for accepting to get this mystery shot in order to keep taking care of those who were sick and suffering, but at this point it was a risk I was willing to take. I was terrified. We had no idea what the possible side effects of the vaccine were or if it even worked. I remember getting poked and being told I had to sit for 30 minutes to be observed to watch for any side effects. Looking back on this time working in the hospital it’s something that will stick with me forever as it’s something that I thought I never would have experienced in my lifetime. This quarantine really flipped the state of the world we live in and honestly I don’t think we’ll ever be the same. #storytime #lemon8contest #hospitallife #Covid19 #hospitaljob #essentialworkers
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly altered the healthcare landscape, revealing the bravery of essential workers who faced overwhelming challenges. Hospitals implemented strict visitor restrictions, leaving healthcare professionals isolated in their efforts to combat the virus. Utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 masks, became vital for safety. Vaccination campaigns eventually aimed to protect not just healthcare workers but also patients and the wider community. The psychological toll of such a pandemic cannot be understated; many hospital staff experienced anxiety and stress due to constant exposure to illness and death. As the world moves towards recovery, understanding these experiences is crucial to ensure that we appreciate the sacrifices made during this crisis. Sharing personal stories like these can help foster a greater appreciation for healthcare workers and the complexities of hospital life at such a critical time in history.
