Hard truths of Nursing School

1. You get in, what you put out!! The more effort you put into learning, the more you are taking away from it. Use this in Clinicals, the more open and willing you are, the more likely you will get more hands on experience and will be taught more from the nurses. If I am ever asked what I can do, “I say I will do anything you allow me too, I am here to learn”. I don’t turn down doing anything, especially helping the CNAs/Techs.

2. You need to put in the time and effort with studying. As you progress the courses get harder and there is so much more material thrown at you. If you do not put in the time or effort it will be hard to grasp the concepts and pass the exams.

3. It is very stressful, you will have assignments, Clinicals, multiple exams in a week. Create a schedule and plan your week out. Be organized & know the due dates. Most nursing schools do not accept late work.

4. You will burn yourself out if you do not make time for yourself. Set aside 1 day of the week where you are doing nothing or minimal work. Relax & do your favorite things. Spend time with those that you love!!

5. You will have instructors or course with rules that do not help much. I have classes where the reviews are not helpful & only questioned based, so if you cannot attend you don’t get your questions answered. This means you are putting in more work, to relearn everything.

6. You might fail exams or classes. THAT IS OKAY!! It can be very embarrassing. But you need to pick yourself up and push even harder. Take this as a learning opportunity, grow from it. Do not dwell on this.

7. You can do it! Take a breath & calm down. It is hard, but it is not impossible!!! Do not let anything stand in your way and push through.
