Sergeant Sam is a gentle and affectionate dog who was found as a stray on December 5th. During his initial triage exam, he was found to be emaciated with wounds on his neck and face, as well as significant hind-end weakness. His bloodwork showed abnormal levels, including severe non-regenerative anemia, some of which have worsened since his arrival at the shelter. He developed an upper respiratory infection and is at high risk of progressing to pneumonia due to his weakened state. Despite not feeling his best, he remains tolerant of handling, loves toys, and craves attention, often seeking comfort in the lap of his handlers. Due to his medical concerns, Sergeant Sam is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner who can give him the ongoing care he needs to recover.

MEDICAL:

On 12/9, Sergeant Sam received a recheck for his medical concerns. He was emaciated and had muscle wasting, severe non-regenerative anemia, and hind-end weakness. His bite wounds were healing. He had lost weight since intake, and his anemia had worsened slightly (although the slight decrease in HCT may be due to improved hydration). He tested negative for heartworm, ehrlichia, Lyme disease, and anaplasma. Sergeant Sam was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI), or "doggy cold," and started on medication. His PCR test is pending. Given his weakened state, he is at high risk of progressing to pneumonia.

During his triage exam on 12/5, Sergeant Sam’s eyes were clear, his ears were waxy, and his nose had green discharge. His teeth had mild tartar, and his gums were pale. He also had a wound on the right side of his neck and face and hind-end weakness. Additionally, he was emaciated. Bloodwork performed on 12/5 showed low RBC, hematocrit, hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, reticulocytes, and reticulocyte hemoglobin, along with high BUN. When repeated on 12/9, most of these levels were even lower, except that his BUN was no longer elevated, and his reticulocytes were on the lower end of normal.

Sergeant Sam had soft eyes and came right up slowly and was easily leashed and plopped out the door and fell into the handlers lap.

LEASH SKILLS:

Doesn't pull – very weak, needs to be carried due to painful injuries and weak body

HANDLING:

In the room, Sergeant Sam tried his hardest to walk around but couldn't muster the strength. He would drag his paws and tip over, falling on his side and wobbling. We kept him still and held him, cuddling him and testing his handling. He allowed all handling and remained loose with a wagging tail. He was extremely tolerant and took some little treats from us (approved from medical). He was so shy but just wanted to be held. The more time he was with us he tried to walk more and was able to stay up with some wobbles for a bit before returning back into the handlers lap for a break.
