Referred for ADH & got told it’s not mental health
I was referred to a psych office by my primary doctor for ADHD treatment, but when I called, the receptionist said, “We don’t treat ADHD. ADHD is not a mental health condition.”
I tried explaining that I also have depression and could use therapy for that, but they’d only see me if the referral was specifically for depression.
I get that some people might argue about semantics, but ADHD is in the DSM-V and often comes with comorbid mental health conditions. It felt dismissive and bizarre. Honestly, I think this has more to do with the fact that ADHD meds are controlled substances than anything else.
Has anyone else had experiences with mental health providers acting like ADHD isn’t a “real” condition?
