If God is real, why didn’t He stop it?

“If God is real, why does He let bad things happen?”

I see this comment all the time. And if I’m being honest, I’ve asked it too. Which is something I love about having a relationship with the Lord because we’re allowed to ask these kinds of questions.

It’s easy to believe in God when life is soft. When prayers are answered the way we want. When doors open, relationships work, and everything feels aligned.

But what about when it doesn’t?

When someone you love walks away. When you’re betrayed. When you’re crying on the bathroom floor and heaven feels silent. When there is sickness and loss. When there is war and violence. I know life feels unfair and God feels distant.

People say,

“If God were real, He wouldn’t let that happen.” But what if we’ve misunderstood what His role actually is?

God didn’t create robots. He created people with free will. And free will means people can choose love but they can also choose harm, selfishness, betrayal, and sin. Not everything that happens is from God. A lot of it is the result of living in a broken world.

A world where people lie and hurt each other and walk away from what’s right. And God doesn’t force control over every decision because forced love isn’t real love.

Just because God allows something, doesn’t mean He abandons you in it. He steps into it with you.

📖 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

📖 “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33

📖 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him…” — Romans 8:28

📖 “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

📖 “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7

God never promised a life without pain. He promised a life where pain wouldn’t have the final word. Think about it. You didn’t get the job you prayed for but later realized it would’ve drained you. A relationship ended and it protected you from something deeper. A delay frustrated you but it redirected you

At the time, it felt like loss. Later, you saw protection.

Sometimes what feels like God being silent is actually God being strategic. And sometimes what breaks you is what leads you back to Him. Pain has a way of stripping everything else away until all that’s left is truth.

If you’re reading this and questioning everything, I get it. You don’t have to have perfect faith. You don’t have to understand everything. Just start here. Talk to Him.

Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s angry. Even if it’s, “God, I don’t even know if You’re real.” He can handle your questions. The same God people blame for the pain is the God who sent His Son to suffer and die so that pain would never be the end of your story.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin. You just have to be willing to seek.

From personal experience, I’ve faced moments when life felt overwhelmingly unfair—times of loss, betrayal, and silence where it seemed God was absent. But over time, I realized that faith doesn’t require perfect understanding; it invites honest questions and messy conversations with God. Living in a world where free will exists means people can choose actions that harm or heal. This freedom is essential for genuine love but also opens the door to pain and brokenness. Recognizing this helped me release the burden of expecting life to always be fair or to have immediate answers for every hardship. The scriptures quoted in the article resonate deeply: Psalm 34:18 reminds me that God is near the brokenhearted, not distant. John 16:33 encourages courage despite troubles. Romans 8:28 reveals the promise that God works all things together for good, even when it doesn't look like it right away. In my own life, missed opportunities and painful endings often seemed like losses initially. Yet looking back, many were divine protections steering me away from harm or leading me toward a better path. This perspective transformed struggles from meaningless suffering into meaningful growth. Another truth I’ve learned is that what feels like God's silence is often His strategic timing. Pain can strip away distractions and force us to confront what truly matters, often drawing us closer to God’s presence. When I doubted or felt abandoned, I found peace in the invitation to simply talk to God honestly—even when the feelings were anger or confusion. Ultimately, faith is a journey marked by seeking, trusting, and sometimes wrestling with hard questions. The God who allowed suffering also entered into it through His Son, offering hope that pain does not have the final word. If you’re struggling with this question, know you’re not alone. Start where you are, embrace the doubts, and be open to the healing process that faith can bring.

Instead of asking God “why?”, ask Him “what?” “What do you want me to learn in this season or through this experience?” 🩷
