More Words to Remove from your Story 📝
I’ve come around with part 2 since you guys like the first one so much! I’ll revamp some other earlier posts to provide better explanations and examples to keep us growing as writers. 🥰 And stay tuned for some drops in the summer 👀 #fyp #writingandcreating #writers #write #writersoflemon8
As a writer striving to improve my storytelling, I found that cutting out unnecessary filler words truly transforms the way readers experience a scene. Instead of using words like "start" or "begin," focusing on the sensory and physical details helps create a more vivid picture. For example, replacing "He started playing the piano" with "His fingers ghosted over the keys, pressing down to let the chord ring throughout the room" turns a basic statement into something poetic and immersive. I also tried toning down words such as "visibly" or "obviously" by shifting the focus to showing the character’s condition through descriptive actions and observations by others. Instead of saying "He was visibly disheveled," describing "He walked into the room with sunken eyes and greasy hair" involves the reader more deeply, making the emotions and atmosphere tangible. Dialogue tags are another area where I realized less can be more. Using "said" sparingly after you establish the speaker helps keep the flow natural without distracting the reader. Enhancing dialogue with gestures or actions like "Isabella drummed her fingers against the table" adds personality and emotion to conversations. Additionally, phrases like "in order to" or "due to" often add unnecessary bulk to sentences. Simplifying them by focusing on the action improves pacing and sharpens your prose. For example, "He turned off his phone to finish his work on time" is more direct than "In order for him to finish his work today, he had to turn off his phone." I’ve found that embracing these adjustments encourages a practice of "show, don’t tell," which helps readers feel more connected and immersed in the story. It also encourages me to play with language and style, ultimately making writing more enjoyable and impactful. If you're looking to refine your writing, try revisiting your drafts and removing these common filler words—your story will thank you!

That helps so much! Thank you!🥰
