Your pace is the heartbeat of your work! ✨
A story needs to move like the ocean. 🌊 With all of its ebbs and flows, tide changes and all, it’s still connected through and by each other. Ensure your arcs work together to build the pace you’re looking for. 🫶🏽Comment below your best tips to get there! ✍🏽 #writing #writersoflemon8 #writingtips #writinghelp #writers
Maintaining the right pace in your writing is like mastering the rhythm of a complex dance; it requires attention to both the big picture and the finer details. One technique I personally find invaluable is periodically reviewing the story arcs every few chapters to ensure the pacing aligns with the plot's emotional beats. For example, I write a quick synopsis of major events ahead and behind my current chapter to remain mindful of how tension ebbs and flows. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of world-building or character backstory, but pacing means balancing these elements so they complement rather than overwhelm. Adding strategic scenes—such as moments that build tension between characters or foreshadow crucial plot points—can transform a flat narrative into an engaging read. In one of my recent projects, inserting a subtle conversation hinting at upcoming conflicts in chapter 5 significantly amplified the impact of chapter 10’s climax. Additionally, I recommend being flexible during editing. Don't hesitate to add or remove scenes if your pacing feels off. It's about creating an ocean-like movement where every wave connects; your story should move naturally yet purposefully. Checking pacing regularly also prevents the story from stalling, helping you stay aware of readers’ experience and ultimately saving time in revision. Remember, pacing is not a one-size-fits-all formula but a personal, evolving aspect of your storytelling craft. By treating it as a heartbeat—sometimes faster, sometimes slower—you help your readers stay emotionally invested and eager to turn the page.
