Happy Pride Month! 🌈🏳️‍🌈

During Pride Month, I’ve often noticed the surge of what many call 'rainbow capitalism'—companies and media using LGBTQIA+ themes superficially to boost sales while lacking genuine support or understanding. It’s frustrating as a member or ally of the community because authentic representation matters more than colorful logos or marketing campaigns. From a writer’s perspective, it’s crucial to move beyond tokenism. The OCR content in this post reminds us to avoid having LGBTQIA+ characters serve merely as comedic relief or one-dimensional sidekicks. I’ve experienced this firsthand in stories where queer characters lacked depth or were simply thrown into narratives to check a diversity box. This approach can unintentionally minimize their real struggles and contributions. What’s helped me create richer characters is focusing on their full humanity—their joys, challenges, relationships, and growth—rather than relying on clichés or stereotypes. When you write queer characters with the same complexity as any other, your readers (queer and non-queer alike) feel seen and understood. Additionally, being mindful consumers is important. During Pride Month, seek out media, literature, and creators that offer genuine representation and support the community beyond just this one month. Supporting LGBTQIA+ authors and content creators year-round helps combat the commercial exploitation of pride. Ultimately, Pride Month should be a celebration of identity and progress, but it’s also a call to authenticity and respect. By examining both what we create and what we consume, we can ensure that Pride is more than a trend—it’s a meaningful and inclusive movement that honors the diverse stories within the LGBTQIA+ community.
