Crucifying our flesh desires
Hey everyone! Following up on the intense topic of crucifying our fleshly desires, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what this truly means and how we can practically navigate this greatest challenge to every believer. It's something I've personally grappled with, and I believe understanding it better can make all the difference. First, let's clarify what we mean by 'fleshly desires.' In a spiritual context, these aren't just about physical urges. They encompass any desire that puts our own will, comfort, or worldly gratification above God's will. The OCR content perfectly highlights this: 'IT'S NOT SATAN IT'S SELF.' It's about that internal struggle, where our fallen nature seeks independent satisfaction. These desires can manifest as pride, selfishness, greed, envy, or yes, even lust. Recognizing the true meaning of fleshly desires is the first step to overcoming them. One of the most potent forms of fleshly desire is lust. The Bible warns us about the dangers of lust for good reason. It's not just about an inappropriate glance; lust is a heart issue, a consuming desire that distorts our view of others and ourselves. It promises fleeting pleasure but ultimately leads to emptiness, guilt, and a disconnect from God. It's a prime example of how 'THE ENEMY USES' our internal weaknesses as leverage, pulling us away from what is good and true. It's a sinful way of desire because it turns people into objects and prioritizes self-gratification over genuine love and respect. So, how do we fight back? This isn't a passive battle. Just like Jesus realized and He embraced His will was not of Himself to do the Father's, we too must actively choose to align our desires with His. Here are a few things that have helped me: Acknowledge and Confess: Don't let shame keep you silent. Acknowledge these desires to God and, if appropriate, to a trusted friend or mentor. Bringing them into the light weakens their power. Immerse Yourself in God's Word: Scripture is a lamp to our feet. It renews our minds and helps us discern between godly desires and fleshly ones. It reminds us of God's perfect plan for love and temptation in our lives – that true love is sacrificial, and temptation is meant to strengthen us, not break us. Cultivate a Spirit of Prayer: Prayer isn't just asking for things; it's communing with God, allowing His Spirit to transform our hearts. When I feel tempted, I immediately turn to prayer, asking for strength and wisdom. Identify Triggers and Set Boundaries: What situations, emotions, or content tend to spark these desires? Once you know, you can proactively avoid or prepare for them. This might mean setting limits on screen time, choosing different entertainment, or even changing routines. Focus on Service and Others: When our focus shifts from ourselves to serving God and others, our desires naturally begin to reorient. It's harder for selfish desires to take root when your heart is actively expressing love. Find Accountable Community: Share your struggles with a small, trusted group. Knowing someone is praying for you and will check in can be incredibly powerful in overcoming eternal temptation: awakening sinful desires within us. Remember, this is a journey, not a sprint. We will stumble, but God's grace is always sufficient. The goal isn't perfection, but consistent surrender and growth, allowing God to refine our hearts daily. We can conquer these desires, not by our own strength, but by leaning on Him who conquered all.
