Happy Founders Day, Sorors! As a proud Spring '21 initiate, this day always fills my heart with an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude. Every January 15th, I'm reminded of the profound legacy we carry, a legacy that began 117 years ago today. It's more than just a date; it's a testament to the vision and courage of our beloved founders. The story of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, truly begins on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., back in 1908. Imagine the determination it took for those trailblazing women to establish the FIRST Black sorority during a time when opportunities for African American women were so limited. Their foresight created a sisterhood dedicated to scholarship, service, and uplifting humanity. This foundational story, etched in the very fabric of our organization, is a constant source of inspiration. It reminds us that we stand on the shoulders of giants. When I put on my AKA jacket, adorned with our timeless emblem and the iconic pink and green, I feel an immediate connection to generations of remarkable women. From groundbreaking educators and civil rights leaders to celebrated artists and political figures, the roster of Alpha Kappa Alpha women is filled with individuals who have shaped history and continue to make an indelible impact on the world. While I cherish the names of our famous sorors, it's the collective spirit of excellence and commitment to service that truly defines us. Each woman contributes to the vibrant tapestry of our sisterhood, carrying forward the torch lit in 1908. Celebrating Founders Day, whether it's the 117th or approaching the 118th, is a sacred tradition. It's a time for reflection on our principles, reaffirmation of our vows, and renewed dedication to our mission. It’s also a time to reconnect with sorors and share in the joy of our shared heritage.
