Seeing this beauty on my walk!

It’s true! Every time I see these beautiful Monarch butterflies fluttering around here in Hawaii, my heart just swells with joy. I truly LOVE THESE BUTTERFLIES, and if you’ve ever asked yourself, “Are there Monarch butterflies in Hawaii?” or “Does Hawaii have Monarch butterflies?” I can happily confirm that the answer is a resounding yes! Unlike their mainland counterparts, the Monarch butterflies you’ll encounter in Hawaii are a non-migratory population. This means they don't undertake the epic journeys across continents that their North American relatives do. Thanks to our year-round warm climate, they can breed and thrive continuously without needing to escape harsh winters. This makes spotting them an almost daily possibility in many areas, not just a seasonal treat. So, why are they here? Monarchs were introduced to Hawaii in the early 1800s, likely hitching rides on ships from North America. They quickly adapted to the islands, finding a ready food source in the form of tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica), which is abundant here. These vibrant plants are essential for their survival, serving as both a nectar source for adults and the only food source for their hungry caterpillars. You’ll often find these beautiful orange and black beauties congregating around patches of milkweed, laying their tiny eggs on the underside of leaves, or feasting on the sweet nectar. If you're planning a nature walk or just exploring around the islands, keep an eye out! You can spot Monarchs in gardens, parks, botanical reserves, and even along roadsides where milkweed grows.
