Living with Chiweenies like ours is never dull. They tend to be incredibly affectionate and love cuddling up on the couch, often burrowing under blankets, but don't let that fool you! They also have bursts of energy and love to play, whether it's zooming around the house or chasing toys in the yard. We've found that they often inherit the fearless attitude of the Chihuahua, making them think they're much bigger than they actually are, which can be quite amusing during playtimes with larger dogs. Their Dachshund side often means they have a strong prey drive, so squirrel-chasing is a national sport in our backyard, and walks are always an adventure when a critter is spotted! One of the fun things about Chiweenies is the variety in their looks. While both of ours have that classic long body and short legs, typical of a Dachshund, you'll see some with longer, more tapered Dachshund-like snouts and others with more apple-shaped Chihuahua heads. Their coats can vary too – short and smooth like a Chihuahua, or a bit wirier like some Dachshunds, and come in a rainbow of colors. Generally, they're small dogs, typically weighing between 5 to 10 pounds and standing about 6 to 10 inches tall, making them perfect lap companions but also sturdy enough for adventures and hikes. When it comes to caring for a Chiweenie, there are a few things we've learned through our experiences. They can be a little prone to back issues due to their long spines, inheriting that trait from their Dachshund lineage, so we're always careful about preventing them from jumping off high furniture or running up and down stairs too frequently. Ramps or pet stairs can be a real lifesaver! Potty training can sometimes be a challenge, as they can inherit the Dachshund's stubbornness, so consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are absolutely key. They respond really well to praise and treats. Socialization from a young age is also super important to ensure they're friendly with other dogs and people, given their protective Chihuahua tendencies. We made sure ours met lots of different people and dogs when they were puppies, and it's paid off in their confident, friendly demeanor. Overall, Chiweenies make fantastic companions for individuals or families who appreciate a dog with a vibrant personality. They're fiercely loyal, incredibly entertaining, and bring so much joy and laughter to our home.
