the letter to my younger self that changed my life

... Read moreWriting a letter to my younger self has been such a profound experience, and it really makes you reflect on how far you've come. If I could sit down with my past self, here are some of the things I'd emphasize, hoping to offer comfort and guidance. First, I'd tell her, 'Everything is truly figure-out-able.' Seriously, those overwhelming moments that feel like the end of the world? They pass. And you, my dear, are so much stronger and more capable than you realize. I remember countless nights worrying about things that, looking back, were mere stepping stones. Whether it was a friendship drama, a tough exam, or feeling lost about my future, somehow, I always found a way through. Trust in your own ability to adapt and learn. The biggest lesson was realizing that even if the path isn't clear, taking one small step forward will eventually reveal the next. Then, there's the crucial message of 'You deserve self-compassion.' This one was a game-changer for me. For so long, I was my own harshest critic, constantly picking apart my flaws and mistakes. I held myself to impossible standards, which only fueled my anxiety and chipped away at my self-esteem. Learning to treat myself with the same kindness and understanding I'd offer a best friend? Revolutionary. It meant acknowledging that it’s okay to not be perfect, to make mistakes, and to have bad days. It’s about being gentle with yourself, especially when you’re struggling. This isn't about letting yourself off the hook, but about fostering a supportive inner voice that helps you grow, rather than tear you down. And yes, 'It gets better.' This isn't just a cliché; it's a profound truth I've lived through. Those feelings of being stuck, of anxiety gnawing at your peace, or the silent battle with depression – they don't vanish overnight, but they do lessen. With time, experience, and actively working on yourself, you develop tools and perspectives that make life more manageable, even joyful. The journey isn't linear, but the overall trajectory is upwards if you keep nurturing your inner world. Finally, I'd reassure her that 'You will become more resilient.' Life throws curveballs, and while some will knock the wind out of you, each one also builds an invisible muscle. You'll learn to bounce back quicker, to find strength in vulnerabilities, and to face challenges with a quiet determination you never thought possible. Embrace every experience, good or bad, as an opportunity to grow. Your younger self might feel fragile, but I promise you, there’s an incredible strength brewing within you, waiting to be discovered. So, hold on tight, keep learning, and remember that every moment is shaping the incredible person you’re becoming.

There’s a reason these letters feel so intense to write. Because they’re usually the things you edited out in real life. The pause before you said what you really felt. The moment you swallowed it to keep the peace. The version of you that stayed “reasonable,” “nice,” “under control.” T
