tell me you have social anxiety without telling me
Fun story: I think the most social anxiety thing I’ve ever done was try to make do with washing my hair with body wash on a week long trip.
when I stayed at my aunt and uncle’s house in upstate NY, the guest bathroom only had body wash and conditioner. I was too shy to speak up so I just tried to make it work (spoiler: it was not working and my hair was a grease pit). At the end of the week trip, my aunt asked me “what do you think of that shampoo?”
I said, “oh, well actually, I didn’t see any shampoo.” So she yells at my uncle, ““YOU DIDNT GIVE THEM SHAMPOO?” 😂 I said ““I thought I could make do just fine with body wash on my hair for a week so I didn’t wanna bring it up!” She said, ““no it won’t be just fine! Get this girl some shampoo STAT!” Lol I love my aunt and uncle and I KNOW they would’ve had no issue getting me shampoo! But social anxiety nonetheless makes us do crazy things!

Social anxiety affects millions of people and can manifest in many forms, from feeling uncomfortable in social gatherings to being unable to voice simple needs. This condition often leads individuals to make choices they might not typically consider, such as not asking for essential items out of fear of judgment. Understanding social anxiety is crucial to breaking the stigma associated with it. Many people feel unseen or unheard due to this anxiety, which can be isolating. Support from friends and family plays a vital role in navigating these situations. If you or someone you know struggles with social anxiety, remember that it’s okay to ask for help. Various techniques like mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy can provide relief and strategies to manage anxiety. Engaging in supportive communities, whether online or in person, can also help in sharing experiences and finding solidarity. If you’re seeking to better understand social anxiety, numerous resources are now available that discuss coping mechanisms and success stories, offering hope to those who feel overwhelmed by their feelings. Sharing personal anecdotes, as I did, can also foster connections and help others relate and understand that they are not alone in their struggles.
