My Experience w Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder hits me hard every year, usually as soon as the clocks change. My mood dips, my motivation disappears, and everything feels heavier...even the things I usually enjoy. (Truly, it sucks so hard.)

I try to use a light therapy lamp daily, especially in the mornings, and that’s helped. Or at the very least, sitting by my window even if I had to curl up in a bunch of blankets to get myself there. I also try to keep some kind of routine, even if it’s just getting out of bed, stretching, and eating breakfast.

Some winters are worse than others, but what’s helped the most is acknowledging that it’s real. I’m not lazy or broken! My brain just struggles when the light disappears.

... Read moreSeasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can disrupt our lives significantly, especially during the darker months. The symptoms often include low energy, lethargy, and a feeling of emotional flatness. Many individuals find themselves emotionally drained as the winter progresses, particularly in January and February, which are often the hardest months. To cope with SAD, several techniques can make a meaningful difference. Utilizing a light therapy lamp can mimic sunlight, helping to regulate mood and energy levels. In addition, designing a simple yet effective daily routine can create a sense of structure. Even small actions, like engaging in a brief journaling exercise, gentle stretching, or stepping outside during sunlight, can alleviate some of the heaviness. Though these approaches may not resolve all symptoms, they can soften the impact of SAD and enhance overall well-being. It's important to acknowledge that these feelings are legitimate. You're not alone in this struggle, and seeking support from friends, family, or mental health professionals can also be a significant part of recovery. Embracing small, positive changes can lead to a better experience during the winter months and beyond.
