I thought my dizziness was anxiety. It wasn’t.

I used to downplay how dizzy and out of breath I got, assuming it was just anxiety or me being “out of shape.” But the symptoms kept showing up when I wasn’t anxious at all. It took a while (and a lot of advocating for myself), but I finally learned it wasn’t just in my head.

Low ferritin and possible POTS were contributing to everything I thought was just mental. If you’re constantly lightheaded, exhausted, or your heart feels like it’s sprinting after standing up, don’t ignore it. I started tracking symptoms, asking for lab tests, and learning how to support my body instead of blaming it.

... Read moreMany individuals, particularly women, often face the challenge of their symptoms being dismissed as "just anxiety," especially when experiencing dizziness, palpitations, or fatigue. However, persistent dizziness and heart rate spikes can be signs of underlying medical conditions like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and low ferritin levels, which require specific diagnosis and treatment. POTS is a form of dysautonomia, a disorder of the autonomic nervous system that affects blood flow and heart rate regulation. Symptoms often include lightheadedness upon standing, fatigue, and an unusually high heart rate (sometimes reaching up to 190 bpm) during mild activity. Low ferritin, a marker of iron storage in the body, can also contribute significantly to these symptoms by causing anemia and reducing oxygen delivery to tissues. It is crucial to differentiate between anxiety-induced symptoms and physiological issues by monitoring vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure, particularly when symptoms occur without anxiety triggers. Comprehensive lab tests including ferritin levels can provide insight into potential iron deficiency. Management strategies for conditions like POTS and low ferritin include dietary adjustments to incorporate iron-rich foods, supplementation with iron and salt tablets, and pacing daily activities with appropriate rest periods. Early recognition and treatment can improve quality of life and reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms. If you or someone you know experiences unexplained dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or prolonged fatigue, it is important to seek thorough medical evaluation rather than attributing these symptoms solely to anxiety. Self-advocacy, symptom tracking, and working with knowledgeable healthcare providers are key steps toward accurate diagnosis and effective care for autonomic disorders and related chronic illnesses.

i have the same! my doctor wasn’t taking me seriously in the slightest so i got extremely fed up and started doing my own research and people thought i was crazy because they all said it’s in my head, nothings wrong, im too young, etc. ive been treating symptoms as if they’re POTS and they’re all mostly… gone! (unless im lacking on the management for the day lol). i also highly recommend having your thyroid looked at if you haven’t :)

This image defines anxiety as a built-in alarm system that becomes problematic when constantly active, leading to the brain scanning for threats and the body feeling tense and tired.
This image explains that anxiety is rarely one's fault, stemming from a mix of biological factors, life experiences like trauma and stress, habits such as poor sleep, and learned responses from past hurts.
This image illustrates types of anxiety, including Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Specific Phobias, with a visual metaphor of a person being overwhelmed by reaching hands.
