How do you balance comfort vs healthy eating?

Balancing comfort food with food that makes me feel physically good is so freaking hard... especially when I’m stressed. One day I’m meal prepping, the next I’m eating a sleeve of Oreos in bed. I wish I were kidding.

What’s helped me the most is not labeling any of it as “good” or “bad” though. and just asking: how do I want to feel later? Sometimes the answer is fuel. Sometimes it’s comfort. And both are valid!!

... Read moreFinding a healthy balance between comfort food and nutritious eating is a challenge many of us face daily, especially during stressful times. It's common to swing between extremes — one moment meal prepping wholesome meals, the next indulging in snacks like Oreos late at night. The key to overcoming this struggle lies not in labeling foods as 'good' or 'bad' but in understanding how different choices make you feel, both physically and mentally. Many people experience that eating very clean, 'healthy' foods can leave them feeling physically energized but mentally deprived or tense. Conversely, indulging in comfort foods often brings immediate happiness but can result in sluggishness or bloating later. This pendulum effect can cause frustration and guilt. The concept of listening to your body’s signals and tuning into how you want to feel after eating is a powerful approach. This mindset encourages asking yourself before meals: Do I want to feel fueled and energized, or do I need comfort and emotional satisfaction? Recognizing that both needs are valid helps foster a more compassionate and flexible relationship with food. It’s also important to remember that no single meal defines your health or well-being. Each meal is an opportunity to make a choice that feels right in the moment, and you can always choose differently at your next meal. This breaks the 'all or nothing' mentality that often leads to unhealthy eating patterns or guilt. Incorporating this approach can reduce the mental stress around food decisions and make eating a more mindful and enjoyable experience. It allows you to embrace the joy of eating comfort foods occasionally without sacrificing your overall health goals. If you struggle with finding this balance, try keeping a food journal focused on how each meal makes you feel afterwards rather than just what you ate. Over time, this can help you identify patterns and food choices that truly support your physical and emotional well-being. Remember, the journey to balanced eating is personal and dynamic. Patience, self-compassion, and listening to your unique needs will guide you to a sustainable and happy way of nourishing yourself.

here’s my solution that’s actually caused me to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle! i eat whatever i want whenever i want, but i eat smaller portions! if i only eat a small portion of food, i let it sit for about twenty minutes. most of the time i notice im full, but other times i’m still hungry so i’ll go back for a little more! i hope this helps🫶🏻
