Hey everyone! So thrilled to share more details about my latest 3D printing project: the SMS Track Plaque! When I first decided to make a custom award, I was looking for something truly unique, and the idea of a 'plaque tracker' really inspired me. It’s not just a decorative piece; it's a fantastic way to commemorate achievements, especially in track and field, or any personal bests you want to celebrate. For this project, I specifically focused on the 'SMS Track' design, which allows for personalized text and logos. What I love about 3D printing these awards is the incredible flexibility. You can customize everything – from the athlete's name and event details to the date and even small graphics. It makes the award so much more meaningful than a generic trophy. The process itself was a lot of fun. I started by getting the design just right in my slicing software. Choosing the right filament was crucial; I went with a durable PLA that prints beautifully and comes in a wide range of colors. One tip I learned early on is to really pay attention to your printer bed. Ensuring good adhesion on my PEI plate was absolutely key to preventing warping and getting those crisp, clean edges. I found that a slightly higher bed temperature worked wonders for this particular PLA. When printing, I recommend a moderate infill, around 15-20%, for a good balance of strength and material efficiency. For the text and any intricate details, a finer layer height, like 0.16mm or 0.2mm, really makes them pop. You want those letters to be perfectly legible when someone views their 'plaque tracker' award! After the print finished, I carefully removed it from the PEI Plate. The 'SMS TR' part of the design came out perfectly. Post-processing for this plaque was minimal, which is always a bonus! A quick sanding to smooth any rough edges, and then I considered adding some acrylic paint to highlight the engraved details, though it looked fantastic even straight off the printer. The satisfaction of holding a custom-made award, knowing every detail was chosen and brought to life by me, is truly unmatched. If you're thinking about creating your own custom awards or 'plaque trackers' for sports teams, school events, or even personal milestones, 3D printing is definitely the way to go. It offers a level of personalization that traditional methods just can't match, and it's a rewarding project from start to finish. Give it a try, and you'll be amazed at what you can create right from your desktop printer!
