This year I focused on my left ear, mostly so I could get sleep since I’m a side sleeper. This was the first piercing I did on this ear in 2024. Love it so much, it’s very unique piercing. The only con is it’s very hard to find jewelry for this piercing.
2. Rook
This was my second piercing on this ear this year. So cute but definitely up there on pain scale and a brutal healing process.
3. Stacked lobe ( on the left & right ear)
Have been wanting my 3rd lobes for a while but kept prioritizing cartilage piercings. Finally decided it was time to spice up my lobes.
4. & 5. Double nostril
I already had my right nostril pierced but had to get it re-pierced at the same time since I hadn’t worn the jewelry in a looong time. The worst part about the entire process was having to get two piercings & heal them at the same time.
6. Septum
This was by far my FAVORITE piercing of 2024. Got it right after my double nostril and it was a breeze to get pierced and to heal.
7. Medusa
This was my most recent piercing. Honestly this piercing HURT like a mf, but healed like a charm. Even with significant swelling that accrued in the first week.
... Read moreReflecting on my 2024 piercing journey, I'm still buzzing from all the exciting additions! Beyond just getting them, understanding each piercing's unique characteristics and aftercare was key to a smooth experience. Let's dive a little deeper into what these piercings entail and some extra tips I picked up.
Deep Dive into My Ear Piercings
Starting with my ear, the Vertical helix really stands out. It’s placed vertically through the helix rim, giving a super distinctive look compared to a traditional helix. While it's true finding jewelry can be a bit tricky because of its unique angle, the payoff in style is huge. Custom pieces or specialized shops are often your best bet for unique adornments. For my Rook piercing, the pain was definitely noticeable, and the healing process was a marathon, not a sprint. This piercing goes through the antihelix fold of cartilage. Patience and diligent cleaning are your best friends here. I found that saline solution soaks and not sleeping on that side (thank goodness I focused on one ear!) were crucial for avoiding irritation. My Stacked lobe piercings were such a fun way to accent my ear! These are usually placed above or below existing lobe piercings, creating a 'stacked' effect. They’re generally easier to heal than cartilage piercings and offer a lot of room for creative jewelry combinations, whether you prefer tiny studs or delicate hoops. This year was all about balancing unique cartilage placements with classic, versatile lobe options.
My Facial Piercing Adventures
Moving to facial piercings, my Double nostril was an interesting challenge, especially getting two done and healing them simultaneously. These are placed on either side of the nostril, or sometimes two on one side. The key here was meticulous cleaning to prevent infection, especially since the nose area can be prone to swelling. Using a gentle saline spray definitely helped. My Septum piercing, though, was by far my favorite experience. Located through the 'sweet spot' of cartilage between your nostrils, it healed incredibly fast for me. I love how versatile it is – you can flip it up for a more subtle look or wear a decorative ring to make a statement. Finally, the Medusa piercing, or philtrum piercing as it's also known, was quite painful initially, but surprisingly easy to heal despite the initial swelling. This is placed in the philtrum, the indentation above the upper lip. Keeping it clean after eating and drinking is paramount, and downsizing the jewelry once the initial swelling subsides is a must to prevent gum or tooth damage.
General Piercing Wisdom I've Gained
Beyond my personal experiences with these specific placements, I've learned some universal truths about body piercings. For anyone curious about why people get piercings, it's often a blend of self-expression, aesthetics, and marking personal milestones. Whether it's an ear piercing like a stacked helix or a rook piercing, or a facial piercing like a medusa and septum combination, each one tells a story. When considering any new piercing, always prioritize a reputable piercer. They'll ensure proper placement, like a rook piercing anatomy diagram labeled to guide you, and provide essential aftercare instructions. Always use implant-grade jewelry (titanium or surgical steel are great) to minimize irritation. And remember, healing times vary greatly, so patience and consistent aftercare are vital for any piercing to truly thrive. Don't be afraid to ask your piercer questions about any swelling or discomfort, and never attempt to change jewelry before your piercing is fully healed!
