Book #4 of 2026: the will to change by #bellhooks

Naming this book “the will to change”, totally eats, because living under a #patriarchal capitalist society, has the majority of us believing that the safest thing we can do to survive and keep going is to disconnect. Disconnect from our loved ones, and inherently ourselves or the things that make us human. Which in turn, makes it to where we can not sustain relationships with others because we would need to have a good relationship with ourselves. Which we can not do, if we suppress and shut down our emotional awareness and capacity to feel.

We have to have the will to change!

... Read moreReading bell hooks’ "The Will to Change" offers a transformative perspective that deeply resonates with anyone navigating the pressures of a patriarchal capitalist society. One compelling insight is how societal expectations often condition men and boys to suppress their emotions, leading to emotional disconnect not only within themselves but also in their relationships with others. This suppression ultimately affects everyone, fostering environments where love and vulnerability are scarce. From personal experience, I observed that many men struggle with expressing feelings openly because they’ve been socially conditioned to associate vulnerability with weakness. This book challenges that narrative by advocating for emotional honesty as a necessary form of courage and self-care. It encourages men to reclaim their humanity by allowing themselves to feel deeply and express emotions without shame. Another powerful aspect is bell hooks’ discussion on radical feminism. While feminism has been pivotal in empowering women, hooks reminds us that neglecting the emotional needs of men can inadvertently create further societal divides. She calls for a balanced approach where men and women support each other’s growth, recognizing that real change requires connection, empathy, and mutual love. The idea of 'disconnect' is particularly relevant today with the digital age amplifying isolation. hooks’ argument that we must reconnect with ourselves to build authentic relationships is a valuable reminder in an era where superficial interactions can feel rampant. By nurturing emotional self-awareness, we can break cycles of disconnection and foster healthier communities. Overall, "The Will to Change" is not just a call to men but to everyone who desires deeper empathy and authentic human connection. It inspired me to reflect on my own emotional patterns and to challenge societal norms that limit our capacity to love freely and fully. This book is an essential read for anyone committed to personal and collective transformation.
