Why I won’t be using gel anymore

As I mentioned in a previous post… my gel lamp was a gift from my mom for Christmas a couple years ago. And it’s great honestly. I have a lot of fun perfecting my nails every time I do them. I would like to think I have it down to a science by now.

Now the problem is… these lights can be really harmful to your skin. My mom freaks out over me using it now afraid I’ll get skin cancer from it. I don’t really use it that often maybe once every few months. So I personally am not too worried about it. However I know how serious that can be and I don’t want to take the unnecessary risk.

I had an interaction with a girl at my old job where she complimented my nails and then suggested I try dip powders instead of gels. And I’ve been intrigued by it for a while but only have gotten around to it now.

Anyways.. what color should i do first? This kit came with 32 powders and i know out of all of them I’ll gravitate towards something pink but I’d love suggestions :)

... Read moreMy decision to move away from gel nails wasn't taken lightly, especially since my gel lamp was a gift! But like my mom, I became increasingly aware of the potential risks associated with UV exposure. We've all seen the studies linking UV lamps to premature skin aging and even an increased risk of skin cancer on our hands. Even though I didn't use it often, the thought of taking an 'unnecessary risk' really stuck with me. It’s not just about the long-term; some people also experience sensitivities or allergies to gel ingredients, leading to issues like brittle nails or skin irritation around the cuticles. That's where dip powder nails really caught my eye! The biggest draw for me was the fact that it doesn't require a UV lamp to cure. It’s a completely different system where you apply a base coat, dip your nail into a colored powder, apply an activator, and then a top coat. This non-UV aspect instantly made it feel like a safer, more health-conscious choice for my DIY nail routine, especially after seeing my new 'Dip Powder Nail Kit 32+4'. Since many of you might be wondering, let's talk about the big comparison I've been researching: Gel X vs. Dip Powder. While my article mentions general 'gel,' Gel X is a popular type where you apply a pre-shaped, full-coverage gel tip and cure it under a UV light. Dip powder, on the other hand, builds layers of colored powder directly onto your natural nail (or over a tip if you prefer extra length). Application: Gel X can be quicker for adding significant length, but dip powder is often seen as more beginner-friendly for color application at home. You just dip and go! My new kit, for example, makes it super straightforward. Durability: Both systems can last a long time, usually 3-4 weeks. I've heard Gel X can be incredibly strong, but I'm hoping my new dip powder kit will give me similar longevity without the UV risk. Removal: This is a big one for nail health! Both involve soaking off with acetone. Gel X might require more filing down first, while dip powder often soaks off a bit more easily if done correctly, minimizing damage to your natural nail. Proper removal is key for healthy nails no matter which system you choose. Appearance: Gel X often has a very smooth, glossy finish, looking very much like salon acrylics. Dip powder also gives a beautiful, strong finish, and you can achieve various looks. I'm excited to try out different shades from my kit, maybe even the 'B22' shade I saw on the label, which looks like a lovely natural tone! Speaking of concerns, some people experience itchy bumps around cuticles with both gel and dip systems. This can often be due to improper application (like getting product on the skin), allergic reactions to specific ingredients in the base coat, activator, or even the powders, or sometimes over-filing during prep. If you're struggling with this, always ensure you're not getting products on your skin, use gentle removal methods, and consider trying a different brand if irritation persists. Patch testing a small area first can also be a good idea. My personal tip? Always push back your cuticles gently and keep them moisturized! For me, the peace of mind knowing I'm reducing UV exposure is huge. Plus, the sheer variety in my 'Dip Powder Nail Kit 32+4' is so exciting! It feels like a fresh start for my nail obsession. So, if you're also on the fence about gel nails or looking for a new DIY option, maybe dip powder is worth exploring for you too. I can't wait to share my first dip powder manicure. I'm still debating between a classic pink or something bolder from the kit!
