Oh, the joy of a fresh garden tomato harvest! There’s truly nothing like stepping into your backyard and picking those perfectly ripe jitomates and tomatoes. Just like in my photo, seeing a green bowl overflowing with a bountiful mix of large red ones and those adorable smaller cherry tomatoes, some in such vibrant shades of red and orange, makes all the gardening effort worth it. It’s a moment of pure bliss, knowing you grew them yourself! For anyone just starting out or looking to improve their harvest, here are a few tips I've picked up over the seasons. First, knowing when to pick your tomatoes is key. For most varieties, you want them to be fully colored – a rich red, orange, or whatever hue your specific variety should be – and feel slightly firm when gently squeezed. If they're too soft, they might be overripe, and if they're too hard, they're not quite ready. I usually find picking them in the morning, after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day sets in, is best. They're at their juiciest then! When you're actually harvesting, be gentle! I use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the stem just above the calyx (the leafy part at the top) rather than pulling them off. This prevents damage to the plant and to the tomato itself, which helps them last longer. Plus, leaving a little bit of stem on can actually extend their shelf life a bit. Once you’ve got your haul, storage is important. Resist the urge to put them in the refrigerator, especially if they’re fully ripe! Cold temperatures can make them mealy and diminish their flavor. I usually store my fresh garden tomatoes at room temperature, stem-side down, on the counter. If they’re getting a bit too ripe and you can't eat them all immediately, that's when you can consider refrigeration for a day or two to halt the ripening process, but try to use them quickly after. Now, what to do with all these delicious jitomates? The possibilities are endless! My absolute favorite way to enjoy them is simply sliced with a sprinkle of sea salt and a drizzle of good olive oil – especially those smaller cherry tomatoes, they burst with flavor! They're also fantastic in a quick bruschetta, tossed into a fresh salad, or blended into a simple, uncooked salsa. You can roast them with garlic and herbs for a rich sauce, or even make homemade tomato soup. A bountiful harvest means endless culinary adventures in the kitchen!
