My Work Day As A Substitute Para-Pro

As a substitute para-pro, my days always look a little different depending on who I’m subbing for. Today I worked in the middle school most of the morning, then was one on one with a special needs student. After that I went home for lunch, and when I got back I spent a couple hours in the Kindergarten classroom helping students. I then worked with another special needs student in a one on one setting. Today I worked the after school program as well! Then finally, I went home after a long day.

I love my job so much! I get to work as much or as little as I want, and every day is different.

As I started my day early with a caffeinated drink for energy, I went to the middle school to assist during the first half of the day. Engaging with middle school students can be challenging yet rewarding; I aimed to foster both academic success and emotional support. I had a chance to work individually with a special needs student, providing tailored educational assistance that caters to their unique learning needs. This one-on-one time is crucial in helping them grasp important springtime math concepts and contribute to their personal growth. The shift to working in the kindergarten classroom afterward presented different challenges, as young children require a different approach and lots of patience. Whether helping with basic literacy skills or guiding them through playful learning activities, the joy of seeing their smiles makes it worthwhile. Finally, my day concluded with the after-school program where continued support and supervision create a safe environment for children who may need a little extra guidance. Each experience has taught me the importance of adaptability and relationships in educational settings. Working as a substitute para-professional truly allows individuals to make a significant impact on students’ lives, knowing that no two days will ever be the same.
