🌱 Garden Journal Update | Tiny Seedlings, Big Dreams

Every growing season begins with small victories, and this week’s garden is full of them. Tomato and pepper seedlings are emerging across the tray, and the first cucurbit has already begun unfurling its true leaves—a reminder that steady progress often happens one day at a time.

This week I’ll be focusing on providing stronger light, improving airflow with a small fan, maintaining consistent bottom watering, and waiting for more true leaves before thinning. Every careful step now helps build healthier, stronger transplants for the fall garden ahead.

What’s growing in your seed trays this week? 🌿

... Read moreStarting seedlings indoors can be one of the most rewarding parts of gardening, as observing those first true leaves emerge feels like a small victory each day. From my personal experience growing tomatoes and peppers from seed, I've found that ensuring adequate lighting is crucial to prevent legginess. Using a bright, adjustable grow light placed just a few inches above the seedlings helps them develop strong, compact stems rather than stretching weakly toward windows. Alongside lighting, maintaining consistent moisture with bottom watering prevents overwatering and soil compaction, promoting healthy root growth. Improving airflow with a small fan is a technique I've adopted that pays dividends by reducing fungal issues and strengthening seedlings. The gentle breeze mimics outdoor conditions, encouraging sturdier stems and reducing disease risk. When thinning seedlings, I usually wait until the first set of true leaves appears, which is a sign they are resilient enough to handle the process. It's always tempting to thin early, but patience truly helps to select the strongest plants for transplantation. Additionally, growing cucurbits—like squash or cucumbers—requires a bit more warmth and light, so placing their trays in a zone with consistent temperature is helpful. Living in a Zone 9a like San Antonio, TX, provides a great outdoor transition window in autumn. The small daily adjustments in lighting, watering, and airflow not only support early seedling health but set the foundation for a successful fall garden. This steady progress, often only visible one day at a time, reminds me why gardening is both an art and an ongoing hands-on learning experience. What methods have you found most effective for nurturing your seedlings to become strong, transplant-ready plants?
