at anime weekend Atlanta 🤓😌
Oh my goodness, where do I even begin with Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA)? Every year, it feels like the ultimate pilgrimage for anime, manga, and gaming fans across the Southeast, and this year at the Georgia World Congress Center, Hall C1, was no exception! If you've ever thought about attending a major anime convention, AWA is absolutely one for the bucket list. For those who might not know, AWA is one of the longest-running and largest anime conventions in the United States. It's an incredible four-day event packed with everything from celebrity voice actor panels to intense competitive gaming, huge dealer's rooms overflowing with merchandise, and an artist's alley that will seriously tempt your wallet. Honestly, walking into the main hall, the energy is just electric! My absolute favorite part has to be the cosplay. The creativity and dedication people put into their costumes are just mind-blowing. I saw so many incredible characters brought to life – from intricate Jojo's Bizarre Adventure outfits to adorable Ghibli creations. Don't be shy about asking for photos; most cosplayers love showing off their hard work! It’s also fascinating to see how people interpret characters in their own unique styles. Another highlight for me is always the Artist Alley. It's a fantastic opportunity to discover new artists and pick up unique, fan-made merchandise that you won't find anywhere else. I always set aside a budget just for this section because there are always so many amazing prints, stickers, and handmade crafts. The Dealer's Room is equally overwhelming (in the best way!), with rows and rows of figures, manga, DVDs, and Japanese snacks. You could spend hours just browsing! If you're planning your first trip to AWA, or even if you're a seasoned con-goer, here are a few personal tips I've picked up over the years, especially for the Georgia World Congress Center venue: Comfort is Key: Seriously, wear comfortable shoes! You'll be doing a lot of walking, standing, and exploring. Trust me, your feet will thank you. Stay Hydrated & Fueled: Conventions are marathon events. Bring a reusable water bottle (there are fountains) and pack some snacks. Food options at the GWCC can be pricey and lines long, so having something on hand is a lifesaver. Plan Ahead (but be flexible): AWA's schedule can be packed! Download the app or check the website beforehand to highlight panels, screenings, or events you absolutely don't want to miss. However, also leave room for spontaneous exploration – sometimes the best memories are made wandering the halls and discovering something unexpected. Cash is King (sometimes): While most vendors accept cards, having some cash on hand for smaller artist alley purchases or quick snacks can be really convenient. Parking & Transit: The GWCC has various parking decks, but they fill up fast and can be expensive. Consider MARTA (Atlanta’s public transport) if you’re staying downtown or nearby; it drops you right at the convention center. It saves a lot of hassle! Photo Etiquette: Always ask before taking a cosplayer's photo. A quick “May I take your picture?” goes a long way. AWA is more than just a convention; it's a vibrant community gathering where you can celebrate your passions with thousands of like-minded people. It's a place where you can freely express your love for anime and find your tribe. Don't miss out on the experience next time!
