I’ve always wanted to learn ASL 🫶 what better time than alongside my little bubba?! #asl #signlanguage #babytips #babysignlanguage #newmom
Starting to learn American Sign Language (ASL) with your baby is such a rewarding experience. As a new mom myself, I found that incorporating simple signs into daily routines not only strengthens our bond but also helps my baby express basic needs before they can speak. Common beginner signs like "milk," "more," "all done," and "sleep" are easy to teach and encourage early communication. One of the best approaches is to consistently pair signs with words during feeding, playtime, and diaper changes. For example, while offering milk, I would sign "milk" repeatedly so my baby begins associating the sign with the action. This repetition builds understanding and anticipation. It’s important to be patient as every baby learns at their own pace—some grasp signs within weeks, others take longer, but the rewards are worthwhile. I also discovered many resources online offering videos and printable flashcards, which made practicing fun and accessible. Joining local or online ASL parent groups provided support and ideas, making this learning journey feel less daunting. By starting early with signs that are easy to recognize and use, you can foster better communication, reduce frustration for both you and your baby, and nurture a deeper connection that lasts far beyond infancy.
