While proponents argue this helps maintain public order and cleanliness, the human cost is significant, especially for people experiencing homelessness. From my observations, such architectural tactics send a clear message of exclusion: 'You are not welcome here.' This can deepen feelings of isolation and invisibility among vulnerable populations. The phrase "ME OFF?" seen on some public installations metaphorically echoes this exclusion, reflecting the urgent need for empathy and reconsideration. The #HomelessLivesMatter movement has brought critical attention to these issues, advocating for urban planning that prioritizes dignity and support over exclusion. Green spaces, traditionally seen as places of leisure and community gathering, can be reimagined as inclusive zones that provide safety and comfort for all citizens, including the homeless. I have witnessed community initiatives where local groups collaborate with municipalities to replace hostile designs with welcoming amenities like sheltered seating, accessible water fountains, and signage promoting respect and support. These changes illustrate that urban environments don’t have to alienate anyone; instead, they can foster connection and well-being.
