I used to just think of pigs as farm animals, but after seeing those adorable two pink piglets peeking over a wooden barrier in a picture, it got me wondering: what exactly is this day all about, and how can we truly celebrate these amazing creatures? Turns out, National Pig Day has been celebrated annually on March 1st since 1972! It was started by two sisters, Ellen Stanley and Mary Lynne Rave, to honor the pig for its contributions to humanity and to dispel negative stereotypes. It's not just about acknowledging them on farms, but really appreciating their unique intelligence, social behaviors, and often misunderstood personalities. So, what is National Pig Day? It's a chance to shine a spotlight on pigs and highlight just how clever, complex, and cute they really are! Many people don't realize that pigs are incredibly intelligent, often considered smarter than dogs and even some primates. They can solve puzzles, play video games with joysticks, and have excellent memories. They're also very social animals, forming strong bonds within their groups and enjoying wallowing together. If you're looking for some national pig day activities, here are a few ideas that I'm personally considering: Learn More: Dive deeper into pig behavior and welfare. There are some fantastic documentaries and books out there that can change your perspective entirely. I’m thinking of watching something tonight! Visit a Sanctuary: If you have a pig sanctuary or humane farm nearby, visiting can be a wonderful way to interact with these animals ethically and learn more about their care. Just seeing them up close can be very impactful. Get Creative: Why not try drawing or painting your own version of those two pink piglets? Or even writing a short story from a pig's perspective! It’s a fun way to engage with the theme. Share the Love: Spread awareness on social media using #NationalPigDay. Share interesting facts or pictures of pigs to help educate your friends and family. Support Pig Welfare: Consider donating to organizations that rescue and care for pigs. Every little bit helps. Beyond these activities, here are some fascinating fun facts about pigs that might surprise you: Pigs communicate through more than 20 different vocalizations, from squeals to grunts! They are naturally very clean animals, contrary to popular belief. If given space, they'll keep their living areas separate from their 'bathroom' areas. Pigs are known to dream, just like humans, and they often huddle together for comfort. They can run surprisingly fast – up to 11 miles per hour! This March 1st national pig day gives us a perfect opportunity to appreciate these remarkable creatures. It’s definitely changed my view, and I hope it changes yours too! How will you be celebrating? Let me know your thoughts or what you're doing to make it a happy national pig day for pigs everywhere!
