Should stakeholders be writing SQL?

... Read moreIn the digital age, data is the backbone of decision-making in organizations. Stakeholders often find themselves needing access to insights without deep technical knowledge. One solution that has gained traction is teaching SQL to non-technical users. By enabling stakeholders to write their own SQL queries, organizations can foster a self-service data culture. This shift not only reduces dependency on technical teams but also accelerates the pace of data-driven insights. As I observed throughout my 25 years in tech, particularly during my tenure with leading companies like Amazon and eBay, equipping non-technical leaders with SQL skills can enhance their understanding of data landscapes. Stakeholders who grasp SQL can ask the right questions and derive meaningful conclusions from data sets. This empowerment leads to innovative solutions and strategic business moves. Moreover, SQL is a standardized programming language across various database systems, making it a valuable skill. Companies can implement training programs or workshops to introduce stakeholders to SQL basics. By investing in such initiatives, organizations foster a culture of continuous learning and agility in their decision-making processes. In conclusion, while not every stakeholder needs to be an SQL expert, having a fundamental understanding can greatly empower them in their roles. As businesses become increasingly reliant on data, promoting self-service capabilities is essential for continued success and efficiency.
