Avoid applying for jobs on the weekends

you want to try your best to stay at the top of the stack and not get buried at the bottom.

... Read moreWhen I first started my job search journey, I thought being proactive meant applying for jobs 24/7, even on weekends. I'd sit there on a Saturday afternoon, submitting application after application, feeling super productive. But weeks went by, and I heard nothing. It was frustrating, and I couldn't understand why my efforts weren't paying off. That's when I dug deeper and realized a crucial mistake: applying for jobs on weekends often means your application gets lost in the shuffle. Think about it from a recruiter's perspective. Most hiring managers and recruiters aren't sifting through applications on a Saturday or Sunday. They're enjoying their time off, just like you should be! So, when Monday morning rolls around, all those weekend applications flood their inbox at once. Your application, submitted on Friday night or Sunday afternoon, is now among the oldest in that new batch. It immediately gets pushed down the 'stack,' as the original article mentions, making it less likely to be seen by human eyes. Through trial and error, and a lot of research, I discovered that the sweet spot for submitting job applications is typically early to mid-week, specifically Monday through Wednesday mornings. Why? Because that's when recruiters are fresh, reviewing new postings, and actively sifting through candidates for interviews. If you apply early in the week, your application has a much better chance of being among the first ones they see when they kick off their work week. Aiming for between 8 AM and 11 AM in the hiring company's timezone is often recommended. This way, your resume lands right when they're starting their review process, increasing your visibility. So, if you're wondering what you should be doing instead of applying for jobs on the weekend, this was a game-changer for me. Instead of mindless submitting, I started using my weekends for strategic job search activities that genuinely moved the needle. First, networking is key. Weekends are great for connecting with people on LinkedIn, attending virtual industry events, or even just reaching out to old colleagues for informational interviews. Building relationships can open doors that applications alone never will. Next, skill development. Remember those 'FREE courses, articles, & more' you see online? Weekends are perfect for diving into them! Whether it's brushing up on a software skill, learning a new language relevant to your industry, or reading in-depth articles about market trends, investing in yourself makes you a stronger candidate. Also, dedicate time to refine your application materials. Instead of rushing through submissions, use the weekend to meticulously tailor your resume and cover letter for specific roles. Proofread everything, ensure your keywords are optimized, and make sure your accomplishments truly shine. I found that spending an hour perfecting one application was far more effective than submitting ten generic ones. Finally, and this is crucial: rest and recharge. The job search can be incredibly draining. Use part of your weekend to step away from the screen, do something you enjoy, and come back to your search refreshed and motivated. Burnout is real, and taking care of your mental well-being is just as important as any job search strategy. In summary, while the urge to be constantly 'doing something' in your job search is strong, being strategic with your timing makes a huge difference. Don't let your efforts get 'buried at the bottom' by applying when no one's looking. Use your weekends wisely to enhance your skills, grow your network, refine your materials, and most importantly, recharge. Trust me, a well-timed application and a focused strategy will yield much better results than a frantic weekend submission spree.

Every single one of my post-grad full-time corporate marketing roles I’ve held was landed via cold applying with my resume on LinkedIn. And to make things more shocking, most of them were also via “Easy Apply” where I simply submitted my resume (and maybe asked a few identity related questions).
