Data analyst SQL Interview Question

here's a real interview question in SQL for data analysts. you're not only expected to be able to write the code but you're expected to be able to explain the output without running the code. and you should be expected to discuss trade-offs between different ways of writing the code.

... Read moreIn the competitive field of data analytics, SQL proficiency is crucial. One common interview question focuses on understanding the differences between SQL operations such as UNION and UNION ALL. A UNION operation merges the results of two or more SELECT queries and eliminates duplicate rows, while UNION ALL includes all duplicates. The choice between them affects performance and result accuracy, especially in large datasets. When preparing for SQL interviews, it's beneficial to practice explaining your thought process behind coding decisions. Interviewers value candidates who can not only write queries but also articulate the rationale behind their choices, including trade-offs related to performance and data integrity. For example, using a UNION can optimize a query's result set but may require more processing time compared to UNION ALL, which yields results faster but at the cost of potential redundancy. Furthermore, examining the implications of using different joins (INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, etc.) in SQL can also be pivotal. Understanding when to use each type of join based on the data relationship is a critical skill for data analysts. You might receive questions involving scenario-based queries that require a deep understanding of relational databases, data models, and business logic. Practicing these scenarios helps reinforce applicable knowledge and boosts confidence during the interview process.
