The Books That Came Home With Me From Brooklyn

I finally posted my finds from the Brooklyn Museum Book Fest and honestly this day still makes me smile. I went in expecting to just walk around and ended up leaving with a small stack of kidlit magic. Brooklyn knows how to throw a festival and the creators I met were some of the kindest people ever.

The first book was an automatic purchase because the author is the whole reason I even knew the festival was happening. I love moments like that. The right person tells you the right thing at the right time and suddenly you are standing in the middle of a museum picking up stories you did not even know you needed.

Then I grabbed a book with artwork that literally stopped me in my tracks. I stood there staring at the cover like I was looking at a painting and not a picture book. That is the kind of art that makes you fall in love with kidlit all over again.

I also picked up something rock star themed for my kidlit corner back home because that space is slowly becoming my happy place. A little bold, a little creative, and very me. Every new book changes the energy of that room in the best way.

Of course I could not leave without the masterpiece that made me laugh the moment I saw it. Some books just say you are coming with me and you simply accept it. Brooklyn has that effect on people.

And finally I grabbed the one that started all the roommate drama in my bear room. Anyone who follows me knows exactly what I mean. This book has a whole storyline attached to it now and that makes it even better.

Brooklyn Museum Book Fest was full of good people, good energy, and really good books. I will definitely be back next year.

... Read moreAttending the Brooklyn Museum Book Fest offers a unique chance for book lovers, especially those passionate about children's literature, to discover hidden gems and connect with talented authors and illustrators. The festival’s atmosphere is vibrant, filled with kindness and creativity, making it an ideal event to experience the magic of kidlit firsthand. Among the standout finds are books like 'Tricky with Chopsticks' by Sylvia Chen, illustrated by Fanny Liem, which captivated visitors with its compelling storytelling. Equally striking is 'My Block Looks Like' by Janelle Harper, illustrated by acclaimed artist Frank Morrison, whose artwork stops readers in their tracks with its painterly quality—a perfect example of how illustrations can transform picture books into true art. For those curating their personal kidlit collections, having diverse themes—from rock star adventures in 'Wee How to Be a Rock Star' by Lisa Tolin and Daniel Duncan to the humorous and endearing 'Hamsters Make Terrible Roommates' written by Cheryl B. Klein and illustrated by Abhi Alwar—adds character and energy to any reading nook. Each book brings something new, whether it’s humor, creativity, or emotional depth, enhancing the reading experience for both kids and adults. This festival also exemplifies how literary events can foster community and inspire readers. Meeting authors who are genuinely passionate about their craft and engaging with other book enthusiasts creates a shared enthusiasm that lasts well beyond the event. For families and educators, these festivals are a treasure trove of resources and inspirations that can be integrated into classrooms and homes alike. Overall, the Brooklyn Museum Book Fest does more than showcase books; it creates an environment where stories come alive, art meets narrative, and readers connect deeply with the books they choose to bring home. Whether you're a longtime fan of children's literature or new to the genre, this event highlights the power of books to surprise, delight, and bring people together.
